On today’s podcast Elizabeth sits down in Orlando, FL with Haley Schluter, who oversees influencers and brand ambassadors for Redken. They talk about what it is like to work with brands, influencer marketing, and what brands are looking for!

Back in 2015, Elizabeth was promoting shades EQ, and Haley liked how much she was in love with the color. As hairstylists started emerging on instagram as influencers, Haley happened upon Elizabeth’s page and started going though her pictures and blog, and then Haley reached out. They then met to work together!
4:50 HOW TO GET THE BRAND/ What brands are looking for today
If you want to work with a specific, HOLD OUT for that brand. Do things that you would think the brand would want you to do, until you can reach out and work together.
INFLUENCER MARKETING.. WHAT IS IT?
People are not opening up magazines or watching commercials on TV. Influencer marketing is just new-age marketing (The new commercials, magazines, etc.) It is the most strategic and accessible way of marketing. This is where brands are expected to promote their products!
It’s also a lot easier for people to trust brands. When people you know are posting about products they love, you are much more likely to buy the products because of your relationship with that individual.
Always remember.. PEOPLE SELL STORIES!! People sell to people, and that’s why influencer marketing works!
10:10 WHAT ARE BRANDS LOOKING FOR?
Back in 2015.. it started with who has the most followers or the greatest reach, but RIGHT now, especially in hair, they are looking for HAIR EDUCATORS, and people who are already using your products in creative and innovative ways.
Engagement is also very important.
If you are a consumer, or a hairstylist.. DON’T go down the route of buying followers. It’s more important to the brand that you are engaging with your followers.
It’s so easy to get discouraged because there are a lot of cool people in the industry, but you need to believe in yourself, and DON’T get in your own way!!
MAKE YOURSELF VISUAL TO YOUR BRAND
Redken looks at DMs. If you want your images reposted, tag in photo, and DM and talk about their products! Ask the brand “What would it take to be reposted?” Brands will do a little hand holding and help you!! Keep creating quality content that you are proud to share! Then.. have patience with yourself!
It’s also important to foster a relationship with your community! You can make a DM group that you can share photos and talk to your followers! Everyone wants community!! If you put the work in and comment on people’s things, it shows your support, and cultivates a sense of community.
Right now… Brands are LOVING video! Video that educates and is interesting is awesome! You don’t need a videographer… Just start trying things!! If something doesn’t work… then try something new!
22:00 DON’T BE SCARED TO REACH OUT TO BRANDS!
Something to remember… brands are run by PEOPLE. Don’t be scared to reach out to a brand because they are big. Don’t feel like you’re not relevant. Reach out and ask “I would like to work with Redken, what are you looking for?”
You’ll never know unless you ASK.
Another idea is to do a collaboration with people!
