Episode 110: How To Start a Podcast

Podcast YT-ep110.jpg

We had the pleasure of having the Hiardustry boys on the Hair Love Radio this week to talk all about how to start a podcast!

They talk about what it’s like to host a podcast, pros/cons of starting a podcast and then they give their advice on how to get the most out of your podcast!

Hairdustry released their first episode in January of 2018.

1:45 WHY DID YOU START A PODCAST AND WHY DO YOU KEEP PODCASTING?

Corey had the idea for a while. He has been listening to podcasts since 2008, and since then he knew he wanted to start a podcast, but he didn’t know how to incorporate a podcast specifically to the hair industry.

In September 2017, Corey met up with Philip Wolfe and ended up being Philip’s personal photographer for the day. After, he knew exactly what he wanted his podcast to be about. He wanted to talk to successful people in the industry. He wanted to know all about their successes, struggles and things they have had to overcome to get to where they are today.

He then pitched Tony the idea, and they started brainstorming how they could not only produce something that people would want to listen to, but they wanted to make sure they were providing value to their audience.

Elizabeth met them when they were 6 months into recording the podcast. It was at a live event that they knew they had something special. There weren’t many others in the industry doing podcasts and after they went live, they realized they had a lot to offer and knew they were on the right path.

Podcasting is such a special safe place to be in community with others. You even get to a level where you feel like you personally know the hosts!

13:15 WHAT HAS BEEN THE COOLEST INTERVIEW?

Talking to Presley. This was the first interview of the live weekend.

Trevor Sorbie. This was one of the bigger names in the industry and they felt honored to interview him!

16:00 HOW TO INTERVIEW SOMEONE (EVEN IF YOU ARE NERVOUS)

Neither of the Hairdustry boys had any Interview experience before the podcast.

When they do pre-talk, they are all pretty nervous. By talking for a while it helps to get all the nerves out and then when they are ready to record everyone is calm.

Corey and Tony have 2 different styles in recording. Corey is more relaxed and Tony likes more structure. There is a fine line between sounding too scripted, but also staying on topic. They like to have a rough outline that they want to follow, but then let the conversation flow organically.

Elizabeth only interviews people she knows so she can ensure that both feel comfortable!

Starting out was tough because they didn’t know anyone, but they knew that to grow an audience they needed to get better. It’s important to remember that it takes a minutes to find your voice, but once you do, it’s easier to gain a following.

It’s also ok to make mistakes! You learn from them and then you grow!
